MID Public Safety joined forces with the City, SAPS, Law Enforcement and Traffic recently to conduct 2 operations (15 May and 2 June) in and around Muizenberg Park. The objectives were to remove illegally erected structures from the park, conduct high visibility patrols in the surrounding area, and focus on crime prevention.

In just one evening between 16h00 and 24h00 on 2 June 5 makeshift structures were removed from the park along with 7 vagrants, 1 arrest was made for possession of drugs, and numerous traffic fines were issued for infringements such as unlicensed drivers and vehicles, and using a cellphone while driving.

Concerted and pro-active visible policing efforts like these are a key component in addressing crime levels in Muizenberg. They send a strong message to criminals and opportunists that the area is not necessarily easy or comfortable for them to operate in.

Of course this message is even stronger when it comes from both the local community as well as authorities so it was great to see neighbourhood watches joining forces on the same night – you may have noticed the cavalcade of community, SAPS and LE cars driving along Main Road that evening around 21h00 in a real show of support for the fight against crime! Members of neighbourhood watch groups between Kalk Bay and Lakeside all participated to make this one happen.

MID looks forward to keeping up the joint ops with SAPS and Law Enforcement. And if you would like to get more information on joining forces with the local network of neighbourhood watches you can visit www.mcsi.org.za.
