Our beautiful suburb has so many facets worthy of appreciation! Just one of these is its fascinating history, and we are fortunate enough to have a group well-versed in its origins and anecdotes in the form of the Muizenberg Historical Conservation Society.
On 1 May the group hosted a Walkabout and Quiz – aimed at young people, but attended by all ages! Led by registered tour guide Moira Mahon, the walk included taking in the site of South Africa’s first ever airmail delivery Zandvlei, the Battle of Muizenberg and our oldest building Het Posthuys among many others – and along the way building sand castles, holding an egg and spoon race and egg rolling down the hill at Muizenberg Park!
On 28 May the group will now host Muizenberg’s first ever Geo-Cache guided walk. Start at 09h00 in the parking area outside the Battle of Muizenberg, registration opens at 08h30, and the walk will finish at 11h00 at the Posthuys Museum. The event is free to members of the Muizenberg Historical Conservation Society and all children, or else R30 per person which includes entry to 2 museums. To book your place contact Moira Mahon on 0824493019 or moiram1@yahoo.com.
Muizenberg is full of hidden secrets so young and old are sure to learn loads and have fun while doing so, and you’ll end up with a few tales about your ‘hood to tell at the next dinner party!
A key aspect of uplifting any suburb is to use and appreciate all the spaces and talents it has to offer as fully as possible. Initiatives like the Children’s Fun Historical Adventure Program, The Muizenberg Festival, The Zandvlei Trust, and even informal initiatives like the Halloween Trick or Treat group that organize outings each year all get us talking to each other, making the most of this glorious place, and building our community.
See you at the next event!
